Use energy grants strategically
You may qualify for several UK home energy grants. Each scheme can cover different improvements. These may include insulation, heat pumps and solar panels.
However, you usually cannot claim two grants for the same measure. Therefore, the order matters. So does the combination of schemes.
For example, you cannot use ECO4 funding and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) for the same measure.
The best sequence for eligible households
- Use ECO4 for insulation first
If you qualify, start with ECO4 funding. Use it for eligible measures such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and other energy-efficiency improvements.
First, improve your home’s fabric. This can reduce heat loss. It can also lower heating demand.
As a result, your home may work better with a heat pump. You also avoid using another grant for the same measure.
- Use BUS for a heat pump
Next, consider the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. It can reduce the cost of an eligible heat pump installation.
The standard BUS grant is currently £7,500. It applies to eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps.
Some off-gas-grid homes can get up to £9,000. This applies when replacing oil or LPG heating. The higher grant runs until 31 March 2027.
- Consider solar after the heat pump
Then look at solar panels. Solar PV can generate electricity for your home. It can also supply some of the electricity your heat pump uses.
However, savings vary. Your results depend on solar generation, electricity use, self-consumption and SEG payments.
So, calculate the likely savings first. Do not assume that combining technologies will always produce the maximum benefit.
Example for a qualifying household
- ECO4: Funding for eligible insulation and energy-efficiency measures, where available
- BUS: Up to £7,500 for an eligible heat pump, or up to £9,000 for qualifying off-gas-grid oil or LPG homes
- Warm Home Discount: A £150 energy bill discount for eligible households in the 2026/27 scheme year
- Solar + SEG: Potential savings from using your own solar electricity, plus payments for eligible electricity exported to the grid
How much could you save?
The combined value can be significant. However, there is no single maximum benefit for every household.
Your result depends on several factors. These include eligibility, installation costs, energy use, property type and local grant availability.
Also, the Warm Home Discount works differently. It reduces your energy bill by £150. It does not provide a cash payment directly to your household.
