The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can provide £7,500 towards an eligible heat pump in England and Wales. You can use the grant to help replace an existing fossil fuel heating system, such as gas, oil or LPG, with a qualifying low-carbon heating system.

For eligible off-gas-grid homes, you may receive up to £9,000 instead. The higher grant applies when you replace qualifying oil or LPG heating and runs until 31 March 2027.

What does the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant cover?

The standard £7,500 BUS grant applies to eligible air-to-water heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. The scheme also offers £2,500 for eligible air-to-air heat pumps and £5,000 for certain biomass boiler installations. However, this guide focuses on the £7,500 heat pump grant.

You can only receive one BUS grant per property. The heat pump must also meet the scheme’s technical requirements. Your installer can check whether the proposed system qualifies before applying.

Who can get the £7,500 heat pump grant?

You must own the property to qualify. You also need to replace an eligible fossil fuel heating system.

You can still qualify if you have previously received energy-efficiency funding, such as support for insulation. However, the scheme excludes most new builds, social housing and properties that have already received government support for a heat pump or biomass boiler.

How do you apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme application works through an MCS-certified installer. First, get quotes from eligible installers and choose the system that suits your property.

Your installer then applies to Ofgem for the BUS voucher. Once Ofgem approves the voucher and you provide the required consent and information, the installer can complete the work. The grant goes towards the installation cost rather than arriving as a separate payment to you.
