- Keep the outdoor unit clear: Remove leaves, grass, snow and other debris that could restrict airflow around the outdoor heat pump unit. Follow your manufacturer’s clearance recommendations rather than assuming a fixed distance, as the required space varies between models.
- Check your heat pump controller or app: Look for fault codes, warning messages or unusual temperature readings. Spotting a problem early can help prevent reduced heat pump performance or higher energy bills.
- Listen for unusual noises: Your heat pump will make some normal operating sounds, but new grinding, screeching, rattling or persistent vibrating noises should be investigated by a qualified engineer.
Seasonal heat pump checks
- Autumn: Clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit before the heating season begins. Check that your radiators, thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and heating controls are working properly and are not blocked by furniture or other objects.
- Spring: Review your hot water and heating settings as the weather gets warmer rather than making large changes unnecessarily. Check that the outdoor unit, drainage area and condensate route are clear so water can drain correctly.
Annual heat pump service by a qualified engineer
- Refrigerant and system checks: Where required, a qualified engineer can check the refrigerant circuit and look for signs of leaks. Heat pumps containing F-gases are subject to specific requirements, and work involving F-gases must be carried out by appropriately qualified and certified professionals.
- Electrical and safety checks: The engineer can inspect electrical connections, controls and other components to identify potential faults and confirm the system is operating safely.
- Heat pump performance check: A service should assess system operation, temperatures and overall performance, helping identify issues that could reduce heat pump efficiency or increase running costs. Ask the engineer to explain any changes in performance and whether the system settings need adjusting.
